track 04 - the mortal remains

The meaning

I was inspired by the story of Little Dorrit and in particular the character of John Chivery. Amy Dorrit was born in the debtors prison where her father is being held. John Chivery is the son of the guard and he is in love with Amy Dorrit. Sadly, Amy does not love him back and even falls for someone else but John Chivery continues to love her, even to the point of encouraging the man she is in love with to realise Amy loves him, thus losing the one he loves but giving her the happiness she deserves.

I’ve always thought it’s such a beautiful picture of true love in some ways.

The characters in my songs are a little different in that the girl, unlike Amy Dorrit is not worthy of the love the man is showing her. She repeatedly rejects and ignores him yet he’s always there, always loving her.

The music

I wanted to evoke a sort of seaside town landscape, as if these two characters had grown up together by the sea all their life.
